Re: South Oahu Simplex net this Friday, Feb 26, at 8:00pm

WH6POI John Osburn

Craig,

Thank you for the information. I attempted to check in numerous times tonight without success, again. I thought I could hit the 146.680 repeater, but evidently not. I tried my HT with a newer antenna but it looks like it didn't make any difference. I heard the "beep" of hitting the repeater, but the NCS (WH6DWF) never responded, and no other station acknowledged me either.

It looks like my 2 choices are either a) camp out directly under the repeater, or b) wait a month (or longer) for my rig I ordered (Kenwood TM-7A) arrives. But, being the stubborn Irishman that I am, I will give a try on the 147.000 on Wednesday night. If you don't hear me, know that I was out there trying!

Regards and thanks,
John (WH6JBO)

Yes, we should have a Windward simplex net. I'm in Kaneohe just mauka of Windward Mall.

Also, feel free to join us the first Wednesday of the month at 8 PM for the Windward Emergency Communications Practice net.
We start using the 147.000 repeater + T 103.5 then change to 146.505, which is District 4's simplex frequency.
From my sunken location 50 watts into a J-Pole gets me to Enchanted Lakes well.

For those Yaesu System Fusion users we could also have a 145.5625 YSF simplex net.

As John experienced, Windward we can often hear Honolulu transmission over the Ko'olaus, especially evening/overnight.
Getting a signal back over the mountains to HNL is trickier. I'm contemplating a small yagi to help, in that regard.

What day of the week/time would work for participants in a Windward net?

Good evening,

I wanted to give you all some feedback on tonight's South Oahu simplex test.

I am physically located in Kailua at the base of the mountain, using a Baofeng BF-F8HP with the stock antenna pushing out 8 watts.

That being said, it would be extremely lucky to hit the repeater located on the Frank Fasi building downtown.

However, when we moved to the 146.565, I very briefly made contact with WH7JB. Otherwise, I was able to hear everyone else (WH6DLT, AH6QO, WH6GSH, WH7GN, WH6UNX, WH6KM, WH6DWF to name a few).

Reception was very good, however transmit was out of the question, at least from my location and the equipment I was using.

Hopefully in the future we can do the same testing, but using the windward repeaters. I have only made contact with 2 people so far (KH6EN on 444.375 and WH7JB).

I will put a new antenna on the HT Wednesday. Hopefully it will improve things.

It was fun tonight, albeit one way.

John (WH6GNI)

John. I thought I heard you too. I was in Hawaii Kai at Maunalua Bay parking lot. Using a Kenwood TM V71 50 W , in mobile mode, using a 40" Diamond 7200A antenna.

Normaly I am at home using a Ed Fong j-pole in my attic.

If you are willing, I would like to try Simplex 146.565 from my home.  And if no good, try simplex using my mobile set up.

What do you think?

Heather: This is something I have wanted to try for sometime now. A couple questions/comments.

1. Do you know if 146.980 will be linked to 146.680 or 146.880. (I doubt I will hit 146.980 from Hawaii Kai)

2. I will listen at 8:00 PM and try and check in; then go to Simplex 146.565 as instructed.  If you do not hear me on 146.565 it means I cannot reach but I will be there for 30 minutes.

3. How long will 146.565 Test be active?  My intent is to try from home base 50W Kenwood TM V71 first (Top Mariners Ridge). Then, if no luck, jump into my car and go mobile (same Kenwood). I will drive (10 min) to Maunalua Bay to transmit from there.

Thank you

We encourage all types of stations to participate (even HTs) - if you are in the Honolulu area and with an HT, there's a good chance at least one of us can hear you!
