[SEC-ARES] ShakeOut 2020 - an Amateur Radio Service Success Story
KH6FHI Joe Tabrah
FYI Aloha, Joe KH6FHI ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Oliver Dully, K6OLI <km6dmf@...> Date: Tue, Oct 27, 2020 at 8:25 AM Subject: [SEC-ARES] ShakeOut 2020 - an Amateur Radio Service Success Story To: <SEC-ARES@groups.io> ShakeOut 2020 - an Amateur Radio Service Success Story By Oliver K6OLI, District Emergency Coordinator ARES LAX Northeast K6OLI (at) ARRL.NET ShakeOut 2020 was a smashing success for amateur radio operators throughout the United States. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) received 175 “Did You Feel It?” (DYFI) reports sent via Winlink for the first time ever over radio on ShakeOut Day. This was the first year for DYFI via Winlink and amateur radio frequencies and the response was impressive! Amateur radio operators practiced sending DYFI reports to USGS from simulated “donut holes”, i.e. areas without internet access. A variety of techniques were employed: ARES LAX Northeast, for example, aggregated DYFI reports via VHF using a gateway, which then autoforwarded the reports on HF to out-of-area gateways with internet connections. Ventura ARES/ACS and ARES LAX High Desert, by contrast, relied on individual HF stations to send reports out-of-area. These varying approaches demonstrate the flexible and creative responses of operators in the Amateur Radio Service based on variations of local conditions. Source: https://earthquake.usgs.gov/scenarios/eventpage/usares20_1_se/dyfi/intensity USGS generously created an event website for ShakeOut 2020 which shows the amateur radio responses in Southern and Central California. Note the clusters of responses in Los Angeles County, Ventura County and San Diego County. For a given area 20 or more responses allow for a decent estimate of earthquake intensity in that area. Transmitting a critical mass of DYFI reports to USGS in a timely manner was a core objective achieved during ShakeOut 2020. Source: https://earthquake.usgs.gov/scenarios/eventpage/usares20_1_se/dyfi/responses-vs-time Timely information is of the essence, as DYFI data informs ShakeMap and Pager, two USGS products that are used by governments, NGOs, public and private companies, and the public to assess the impact seismic events and organize their responses. During ShakeOut the bulk of DYFI reports were sent in the first hour after the simulated event had occurred, achieving a second objective of ShakeOut 2020 for amateur radio operators. Astute amateur radio operators will notice that a circuit (or radio network) that can move DYFI reports out-of-area reliably can also move other traffic reliably. It is therefore critical for amateur radio operators in earthquake country to become familiar and comfortable with DYFI reports, if they want to help guide high level responses and provide added value to the communities they live in. We invite you to check out the ShakeOut 2020 event website and learn about how the data provided by amateur radio operators contributes to ShakeMap: https://earthquake.usgs.gov/scenarios/eventpage/usares20_1_se/dyfi/intensity We would like to thank USGS for their support, collaboration and guidance and for providing data for ShakeOut 2020. We would also like to thank ARES LAX, Ventura ARES/ACS, San Diego ARES and Hawaii ARES for providing DYFI training to their operators and making this exercise so successful. And we would like to thank the Winlink Development Team for coding the DYFI form and making it available to all amateur radio operators. If you or your group are interested in a “Did You Feel It? for Winlink” online Workshop, please contact Oliver K6OLI at K6OLI (at) ARRL.NET or vial Winlink at K6OLI.

2021 Renewal Season has begun!
WH7GG Keith Higa
CQ EARC! I can't believe another year is almost over. I hope everyone is doing well in these unprecedented times. Although we aren't able to get together as a club for now, I know that we have definitely been staying in touch in other ways, including our Zoom general meetings and our nightly nets on the linked repeaters. With our radios, we ham radio operators have a way to keep in touch across miles. Of course, keeping repeaters on the air takes time and money, and this is where your membership and support of EARC comes in, now more than ever. Among other things, we use your membership dues to maintain and repair the repeater system so we can stay in touch even when physically separated. With the arrival of 4th quarter comes the beginning of renewal season, so I ask you to reaffirm your commitment to the EARC with your membership renewal. Annual dues are still $20.00 for calendar year 2021 (January 1 to December 31). You might not be able to pay me directly for your dues as you've done in the past, but we still have options for you: 1. You can mail your payment to PO Box 30315, Honolulu, HI 96820. We have been checking club email at least once a week during the pandemic and we'll continue to do so. 2. You can send your payment via PayPal by going to http://www.earchi.org/member_pay.html and following the directions. You don't need to have a PayPal account to pay. If you know any members who are not on the club reflector, please pass this on to them. Since our club meetings are now on Zoom and we announce the meetings via the reflector (we don't place the link on our website for security reasons), it's critical that all our members be getting the club emails.
I'll be sending reminders throughout renewal season. Let's see if we can reach 100 renewed members by December 31, and reach or exceed our current membership of 115 by March. If you have any questions on your membership, please let me know. Hoping to hear from you, and hope to see a lot of you at the meeting tonight! Thanks and 73, Keith Higa, WH7GG Treasurer/Membership Chair, EARC

EARC Board of Directors Nomination Form
KH6WG Skawamae Kawamae
To: EARC All As we have not received any nominations thus far, the thought is that sending you this form will make it easier. Any and all positions are open. You may nominate yourself or others. If you nominate others, it would be wise to validate if that person is willing to accept the position. General Board member Garret Larson (WH6GL) has moved to Texas and has resigned his position. We would like to fill that position at minimum. The Board is there for its members. Please provide feedback to make this a better organization and promote the different facets of amateur radio. Thanks in advance. de KH6WG

Someone might have just turned them on. The site is 100% solar/battery. I think we might have a bad panel pulling the charge voltage down. Discussion is underway to upgrade the system. de kH6WG

Military adopts APRS like functions
KH6CP Craig Paul
In SET 2019 some Windward Hams demonstrated networking functions of APRS and geographical situational awareness, not of an enemy's location, but of road obstructions. Some in EARC built an inexpensive cable to utilize APRS between an HT and their Android phones for APRS. Looks like the military is finding this same capability useful. Craig/KH6CP
