For all of those in "amateur radio land", the EARC has organized a swap meet for amateur radio equipment to be held Saturday, 1 December, at the Fleet Reserve Association, 891 Valkenburgh Street, Honolulu 96818 between 10 AM and 2 PM.  More information for sellers will be circulated shortly.  Meanwhile, mark your calendars and start sifting through your treasures for things you are ready to pass on, and review your wish lists for things you really want!....

Donation of wire to the EARC Antenna Project

KH6DK Peter Aiea

Industrial Electronics, located in Kalihi, donated 3 spools of TFFN stranded wire to the EARC Antenna Project worth over $100.  I was down there to buy wire and got to talking with Manfred Mueller, owner, about radio and HF communications.  When it came time to cash out, Manfred, with a big smile on his face, pushed the stack of wire back to me and said. "for the club! ,  brings back good memories !". Big mahalos to Industrial Electronics for their donation!

Art,
Just for you to have a better understanding of what HAM RADIO OPERATERS do in preparation for, during, and after emergencies.

Others may have a misconception of how important this element is in communication, island wide, state wide, national wide, and worldwide.

Yes, this is a hobby at one level. but
so important on another higher level.

Shared enough.

Thank you for being the Chairperson of this 100th Anniversary of the signing of the Armistice in Hawaii. It has been a long ride, and I am Proud to be a member of your Committee.

To Oahu ARES North District members,

de KH6WG

Sorry for the late notice.  Been busy with work and other radio stuff.  Pleasee see below from Clem and attached.  I have provided the ICS 205 Band Plan for North District.   Please participate if you can.  Simulating NO repeaters.  In fact the DEM and possibly the HIEMA linked repeaters are in real world, being taken down for maintenance after the Friday night EARC net.

Aloha,

de KH6WG

To all,

Attached is the ARRL SET 2018 exercise document.  The exercise will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2018 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon HST.

Please review and put together your own plan for your respective districts.  Develop your own ICS-205 Incident Radio Communications Plan.  Also, ensure you spread the word out to your members and to others who would be interested in participating in this exercise.  Though this is an ARRL exercise, it is open to everyone to participate.

We are simulating a situation very similar to what happened when Hurricane Marie in 2017 devastated Puerto Rico.  Oscar Resto (KP4RF), ARRL Section Manager for Puerto Rico, had made several presentations in Hawaii recently about what happened in Puerto Rico.  We can learn from him.  This exercise will be a worst case scenario for Hawaii.  We want to develop an incident map for this exercise.  Therefore, we want as many simulated messages to be sent so we can map it on each island.

We are encouraging the use of VHF simplex operation and digital mode, i.e., Winlink operations.

Again, I encourage the widest dissemination of this exercise information and encourage as many Hams to participate.

Any questions, please contact me.

Have a great exercise and have fun.

Interest in a ham radio demo on Nov. 3rd?

NH6PY Ralph Toyama

Is anyone interested and available to do a ham radio demonstration on Saturday November 3rd at Leeward Community College? The event runs 9 am - 3 pm. Every year, we have a community fair that features interactive educational activities, games, food, and entertainment. I haven't promised anything to the organizing committee yet. I'm just seeing if there are enough people and equipment available to pull this off.

Thanks,
Ralph Toyama, NH6PY

Hello,

I am an associate producer on the long-running Travel Channel series, Mysteries at the Museum. We’re currently producing a standalone documentary special that will focus on the heroic story of Amelia Earhart.

We are planning to travel to Hawaii in the next few weeks to film. A section of our story involves the use of a Radio Direction Finder (by Earhart). She used a classic Bendex RDF during her attempt to fly around the world. While in Hawaii we’d like to film a demonstration of a similar model RDF with our host Don Wildman. I was hoping that someone in the Emergency Amateur Radio Club would be able to help us locate and demonstrate an old Radio Direction Finder. Below are photos of similar model RDF’s. We don’t need the exact model that Earhart used, but from around the same general time period.

Would you have time for a quick phone conversation about the project?

Below I’ve included some information about the documentary series, Mysteries at the Museum.  Also, here is a link to a recent documentary we produced featuring our host Don Wildman in Egypt. This will give you a sense of the format of our show.

https://spaces.hightail.com/receive/w8lnYTyCC6

And here is a bit about our host, Don Wildman:

Don Wildman is fast becoming one the most recognizable faces in documentary television. As host of "Mysteries at the Museum," "Monumental Mysteries" and "Greatest Mysteries," Wildman's journey is full of surprises and adventure. Whether traversing obscure or familiar turf, Wildman’s mission is to expose the real truth lying beneath the surface.

In Travel Channel's "Mysteries at the Museum," Wildman takes viewers across the United States, delving deep into the vaults of the nation's most revered institutions and unearthing wondrous treasures from the nation’s past. In "Monumental Mysteries," he uncovers some of America’s most interesting events and greatest triumphs that are linked to the country’s history-rich monuments. In each of the "Greatest Mysteries" specials, Wildman travels the globe to some of the most iconic and carefully-guarded places in the world, where he shares many of their fascinating stories. Previously, Wildman served as host of Travel Channel's "Off Limits," where he crisscrossed the United States, providing viewers with a peek behind locked doors to uncover the secrets of the country's man-made world.

Before Travel Channel, Wildman served as the intrepid host of History’s adventure series, "Cities of the Underworld," where he explored hundreds of mysterious tunnels, catacombs, crypts and bunker systems found beneath more than forty cities and regions around the globe. Wildman has worked across a spectrum of subjects from history to engineering to sports adventure. On ESPN's "Men’s Journal," he paddled wild rivers in Chile, scaled towering mountains in Oregon, and fly-fished until he could fish no more. In 2011, he hosted the three-part historical investigation series, "Filthy Cities" – a joint venture between Discovery Channel and BBC.

Thank you. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Best Regards,

Dearl Nelson
