Date
Workshop on setting up Wnlink Express for use on VhF/UHF

KH6FHI Joe Tabrah

Dear EARC Member,
Joe Seproni, AH0A, our ARRL section manager, asked me to post the following announcement on his behalf:

EARC/ARES is planning a workshop to help Amateurs with interest in setting up their portable Windows computers and VHF transceivers to operate the Winlink Express email program, and other digital modes.

The workshop will physically connect your computer to your VHF transceiver, installing Winlink Express and making VHF gateway and peer-to-peer contacts.  Participants must bring their equipment to the workshop.

The software training will include using some of the Winlink  features – sending and receiving email via VHF RF connections, message templates, GPS position reporting, ICS-309 logs, images editing, attachments and communication sessions for VHF packet and Internet.  Time permitting both Packet and VARA software modems will be installed and tested.

Cost of the three-hour workshop and interconnect materials may be as much as $30 per attendee, to be paid at the door. Alternatively, there may be options to use materials procured by the participant that will lower costs.

Attendance is limited and  subject to confirmation equipment is compatible with suggested cabling choices. The number of students is limited.  Register early!

If you are interested, please email me at ah0a@.... Include the (1) PC model, (2) the version of Windows, (3) your transceiver model and (4) cables you believe are correct for digital modes -- ; information required for us to recommend preordering components.  Once the computer and transceiver models are known we will recommend cabling for your equipment and a method to purchase them.

The workshop is organized around use of the Easy Digi interface board, which can be assembled in the first 30 minutes of the workshop.  Software set up and verification of other devices will be supported, for example, Signalink.  Please let us know what (5) interconnection interface, other than the workshop recommended Easy Digi board you want to use for software setup.

The workshop will be held from 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm on Saturday March 16th at the Manoa Public Library.

2716 Woodlawn Dr, Honolulu - http://bit.ly/2sxWgKX

If there is a lot of interest additional workshops may be scheduled later.

DX to far side of the Moon ?

KH6WM Warren Munro

The recent Chinese satellite landing on the far side of the Moon has raised the question of how to communicate when out of line of sight ?

Solution:  they launched a relay satellite visible to both Earth and the "far side" well ahead of time. It works FB.

But a long path.

Calendar Reminder

KH6WG Skawamae Kawamae

All,
It seems the Groups.io calendar reminder that went out, listed the Fleet Reserve as the location for our General Membership Meeting, this coming Tuesday, the 19th.  It is in fact at the Manoa Public Library.  The parking lot will be open and parking is available on Woodlawn drive.  Do NOT park at the UofH Institute for Astronomy.  They ticket there, is what I hear.  Looking forward to seeing you at the new temp venue.

Aloha,

Foxhunt April 7th

KH6OWL Darren Holbrook

Just a reminder about the foxhunt on April 7th from 3 to 5 PM in Kapolei.

As of today I have had only one person email me to sign up.  I need to know a number so I can coordinate it with the local HPD to give them a heads up. Plus, I just need to know if it is worth having or no one is interested.

Please email me if you are interested.
Name, Call, if you will be a team or individual, (if a team send their info as well), cell phone if you have one,

You can check out the website for more information at  http://www.hamradiohawaii.com/foxhunt or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/groups/HamRadioHawaii/ and on the right click on Foxhunt under popular topics in post.

Thanks

It's not too late to renew your EARC membership for 2019

WH7GG Keith Higa

QST QST EARC,

I know a lot of you have been busy. Believe me, I know the feeling...I've had a very busy several months. How busy? You would think that as treasurer, I would be one of the first people to pay dues each year. I thought so too...until I checked my records and found that I had not paid my dues. I'm paid now and good for the rest of year.

I bring this up to say that it's not too late to renew your EARC membership. If it's slipped your mind, I totally understand.

You can pay your dues via the EARC website by PayPal, mail your dues to PO Box 30315, Honolulu, HI 96820, or pay me in person at any EARC membership meeting. Of course, if you have any questions on your membership status, I would be more than happy to check for you; just ask.

For the 86 members who have paid up this point, thanks so much for your continued support. I would like to get this number to 100 members by the end of the month, or at least until the next meeting in April.

As always, thank you for your support of the Emergency Amateur Radio Club and our mission to advance amateur radio in the islands.

Mahalo and 73,

Keith Higa
Treasurer/Membership Chair

Looking for individuals willing to review and judge Middle School and High School student science projects, related to Radio and RF.  PLMK ASAP if you are able to help with this effort.  This is the reason the EARC maintains the KH6IJ Scholarship fund.  The EARC donates monetary prizes to this event from the KH6IJ fund.  Thanks in advance.

Go-kit Challenge

KH6OWL Darren Holbrook

What: Go-kit Challenge

When: Date / Time: Saturday, May 4, 2019 0900 Hrs. to 1130 Hrs.

Where: Kapolei Skate Park, 1077 Manawai St, Kapolei, HI  96707

Why: First and foremost, this event is intended to be fun and educational. The competition is just for fun and the real prize is the bragging rights. There will be some small awards, but don’t get too excited. Judging will take place between 10 AM and 11 AM.  Your go kit must be able to power on in order to be chosen as a finalist. You can still bring it and show it off but cannot be chosen as a finalist.  Battery, Sun, Wind, you name it, as long as it can power on, you will be in the mix. You can also show off your car-mounted radios, which will be a different category.

Participants are required to provide their own power, snacks, and entertainment.

Remember when you must deploy with your go-kit you may be expected to provide for your own needs and sustenance for up to 72-hours.

You don’t need to bring a 72-hour kit, but bring enough to survive until the event is over.

Your kit could be judged on the following:

Go Kit:

Capability: UHF/VHF, Digital, Winlink, HF, the more the better.

Frequency usage: How bands can you go on?

Power Type: Solar, Wind, Battery, Generator, Electrical Hook up.

Weight: The lighter the better, you have to tell us the weight.

How is it all put together? What container holds the set up.

Bonus points for out of the box thinking.

Vehicle Mounted:
Quality of mounting

Cables and wires hidden

Unique ways to mount

Capability: UHF/VHF, Digital, Winlink, HF, the more the better.

Antenna Mounting

Frequency usage: How bands can you go on?

Bonus points for out of the box thinking.
