Happy New Year 2022! It's time to renew (if you haven't already)!

WH7GG Keith Higa

CQ CQ EARC from WH7GG!

As I write this, there are about two hours left in 2021, and it has been a year like no other, in some ways good, and in some ways not so much. I know that in my own life, I've been managing quite a bit of change, especially in the last few months, some self-initiated, other things thrust from outside. And of course, all of this in the middle of a global pandemic.

I'm looking forward to 2022 and what it will offer, opportunities and challenges all.

One way to get your year off to a good start is by renewing your membership for 2022. Yup, it's that time of the year again.

To the 34 people who have renewed or joined for the first time in the last few months, thank you very much for your continued support of the EARC. And if you would like to renew your membership, you can do so by following this link: http://www.earchi.org/member_pay.html. This will take you to the member payment page on the EARC website (it is not accessible from the main page).

You can, of course, also pay your dues by mail:

PO Box 30315
Honolulu, HI  96820

Keep in mind that I have been working from home and expect to continue to do so for the foreseeable future. I am continuing to do weekly checks of the club mailbox at the airport post office, so I will receive your dues if you pay by check, but be advised that it may take a while for your check to clear as I have to find time to physically go to a bank branch during business hours to do the deposit. For that reason, I encourage people to use PayPal if they feel comfortable with it and can do so.

As always, if you have any questions on your membership, feel free to contact me at keith.higa@...

Here's to a safe and happy 2022 for everyone!

Stay safe and healthy, 73,

Mini Field Day 2021

KH6WG Skawamae Kawamae

Thanks to all that came out for the EARC Mini Field Day 2021 at Maunalua Bay last night.  Good food and great conversation had by all.  It was great to make so many eyeball QSO's and link the face to a bunch of the new callsigns.  HF propagation wasn't happening so most were just on HT's and on the repeater(s).  Thanks to NH7QH, WH6CPH and WH6EUG for donations to the door prizes.

Others had already come and gone.  This was who was onsite when we tore down.  Thanks for all who shared photos, KH6LT and WH6CPH.

Mini Field Day 2021

KH6WG Skawamae Kawamae

Aloha all,
Please join the EARC at Maunalua Bay aka Hawaii Kai Boat Ramp on Saturday, December 18, 2021 from 3:30 pm to 11:00 pm for our Mini Field Day 2021.  Due to covid, we were not able to have one in 2020.  It is a potluck event.  Bring a show and tell and/or just operate from the parking area.  Be mindful of others and coordinate bands and operations in general.  Or just come for the fellowship.  There will be a few door prizes as well.

New Brandmeister DMR

KH6WG Skawamae Kawamae

Aloha all,
Thanks so much for your patience.  The EARC continues to expand coverage of DMR as a discreet network for backup communications.  This does not mean it is specifically for backup to the analog network(s) already in place.  The Brandmeister DMR network is available for anyone to use.  You do have to program a DMR TDMA transceiver to use.  The new repeater is in Whitmore Village.  Much thanks to Gus, NH7J for the new home and antenna system.  The location should serve the majority of the Oahu central plain from Halawa to Haleiwa and hopefully beyond.  Repeater info:

TX: 443.2500 MHz
RX: 448.2500 MHz
cc: 6

TS1: 3115 - Hawaii Statewide
TS2: PTT - user accessible (whatever Talk Group you wish to key up)

Aloha & 73

Pau Hana HF Aloha Net?

AH6T Joe Tabrah

There are two general conversation  HF nets during the day here in Hawaii, one at 09:00 and the other at 16:00, that serve those of us that are retired.   These are SSB nets that are run on 7.088, 5.3715, or 3880, depending on NVIS propagation.  Besides providing the opportunity to check equipment and signals, a wide diversity of technical and general interest topics are discussed each day which serve to bring Hawaii's amateur community closer together.  For net details please visit www.40meter.net.

There has been some interest in starting a similar net, but early in the evening to allow those that work to participate.  Please reply to KH6FHI@... if you are interested and what would be a convenient time.  Depending on interest here on Oahu as well as the neighbor islands we can get this new net operating.

Aloha,
KH6FHI
Joe

K7GPS writes of past Oahu SETs and EOC liking graphical situational awareness

KH6CP Craig Paul

https://files.tapr.org/psr/psr149.pdf

Oahu SET activites start on p. 11.
(Robin Liu gets a mention.)

SET and EOC (from p. 12):

For the duration of the SET, the Commander remained there seeing what was going on and directing his resources based on what was on the APRS map. It was a coup for us wanting to get APRS into the EOC. I know this has been accomplished around the country and many EOCs have an APRS station with people familiar with operating the various clients.

What else have we used APRS for over the years? Marathon support has been a big user of APRS. I’ve done these on Oahu, Seattle and Missoula with chase and other support vehicles, First Aid and check point stations all on APRS. We’ve outfitted bikes, motorbikes and ATVs with trackers, ambulances too so we know where the race resources are. Fun stuff.

EmComm Training Organization

Operation “Cyber Wind”

Saturday, November 13th, 2021

 Read This First !!!

In order to participate in this exercise you need to first send a simple Winlink message indicating your intent to participate.  Send it to your ETO Clearinghouse (ETO-nn where “nn” is your Region Number).

You need to send this message NO LATER THAN 6:00 PM Central Standard Time on Sunday, November 7th.   (That’s 00:00 UTC, Monday, November 8th.)

In the message, which must be originated from your Call Sign Winlink account, include:
Subject:  Cyber Wind
Message: YES

If you are NOT planning to participate, DO NOT SEND a message.

Within 24 hours of that deadline, your Clearinghouse will send an ICS-213 form to you.  This form will be the basis for the exercise, and will be self-explanatory.  You will reply to this ICS-213 in the exercise.

Please reply to the ICS-213 (answering all the questions) as prescribed in the “Scenario and Guidelines” document (enclosed).

The Exercise itself will take place on Saturday, November 13th (NOT on Thursday this week).

This exercise is designed to simulate a real-world call-up.  For that reason, there will be NO EXCEPTIONS to the timing specified above.  We will NOT accept late sign-up messages, and if you do not receive the ICS-213 for any reason, you will not be able to participate.  All subsequent activity must be on Saturday, November 13.

This exercise requires 100% adherence to the guidelines by both Participants AND Clearinghouse stations.

Things to remember on Sunday, November 7:

1)   Set your clocks back 1 hour, to “Standard Time.”

2)   Check the batteries in your Smoke Detectors

3)   Send the Winlink message to your Clearinghouse!

For technical questions about this week's Winlink Thursday please send an email to: ETO.Technical.Team@EmComm-Training.groups.io

Learn the basics of this powerful emergency communications tool in four, no-charge Zoom class sessions taught by four members of ARES Los Angeles -- KK6DA, W0DHG, NR6V, W6AH. Each 60-90-minute class will demo what you need to use Winlink over-the-air, and is accompanied by a series of video shorts you can review at your own pace. All classes will be archived at WAVETALKERS.COM to view again and again.

If you can do email, you can do email by amateur radio with powerful built-in EMCOMM forms to assist your served agencies. Open to all licensed amateur radio operators. Please feel free to forward to anyone or any group who will find learning the basics of Winlink a valuable experience from people who experiment with the future of EMCOMM frequently. Aloha again,

This message is a follow-up to the Leeward O`ahu Simplex Net conducted yesterday, October 24th.  Linked below are the summary report and summary map for your review.  Note, use of the map where colored lines identify the path between two stations: green for confirmed contact between both stations; yellow for confirmed contact between both stations, however too weak a signal to transmit a message; and red for only one of two stations confirming contact.

Mahalo to all stations who participated and to those who followed the previous emails instructions.  Each attempt at this net, I've implemented a different element to test our ability to adapt to potential changes.  For this month, that was conducting the net entirely on simplex as during a real world disaster operation, we may not have the convenience of repeaters.

This net will continue along the same methodology although future nets will be scaled down for the benefit of leeward O`ahu operators.  If you would like to continue receiving this announcement or other content related to leeward O`ahu activities, please express your interest with a response to this email.  Upon your confirmation, I will subscribe you to our leeward O`ahu groups.io.  Anyone is welcome to receive messages from this new groups.io.  I will discontinue sending emails to individuals and/or island/state-wide mailing lists and will exclusively use this new groups.io account.

This net is intended to provide a venue for operators to: (1) test equipment; (2) examine signal coverage within leeward O`ahu; (3) determine paths to pass messages to areas outside leeward O`ahu; and (4) exercise emergency communication (EMCOMM) practices.

A departure from previous months, the net will exclusively be conducted on frequency 146.4450MHz (simplex).  If you are unable to hear net control, standby and we will attempt relay(s).  Net control will conduct a check-in style net.  All are encouraged to record the list of participants as they check-in and note those you're able to hear well enough to potentially pass a voice message with.  Please send me a follow-up report via email of your notes at the conclusion of the net.  For example:

AL1PHA - Yes
BR2AVO - No

Note: Yes, meaning heard and able to potentially pass a voice message with.  No, meaning weak/scratchy signal or not heard at all.

I will be available on the DEM RACES repeater system (primary receive frequency 146.8600MHz, transmit frequency 146.2600MHz, and tone 88.5Hz) directly following the conclusion of the net for discussion, however a formal net will not be conducted on the repeater(s).
