KH7HO Clem

To all,

I understand a lot of Hams have been trying to send messages to Jack and to me.  Please note the instructions did not say to change your settings to 2300 hz wide to 500 hz narrow in your VARA HF settings.  Please change to 500 hz for both the 40M and 20M bands during the time schedule for these two bands.

Thanks,
Clem

I will no longer be the ETO-HI for future ETO Thursday Winlink exercises after this exercise.  I have recommended that ETO-HI be dissolved and be included in the ETO-09 (Hawaii is part of FEMA Region 9).

This 4th  week, for those of you with a reasonably good HF station, we offer the opportunity to make a Winlink Peer-to-Peer (P2P) HF connection to one of our Target stations across the country. A P2P connection requires that your Winlink Express station connect to another Winlink Express station, NOT a Winlink RMS node, and pass messages addressed to that station only. You must be using the same mode for communication. In our case we are using VARA HF P2P.

See the attached instructions and second attachment for the list of Target stations.
Band conditions and  the magic of the ether will determine your successes.
Good Luck.

    Hi Clem,
Thank you for the email below.   I did contact Van to get on his mailing list since I am starting to get more active using Winlink.
I was wondering if I could purchase a VARA license per your email below.

I also was curious what was involved in becoming a member in RACES?

    Thank you.

    To all,

In case you did not get this announcement, please participate by using the Local Weather Report in the Winlink template.  Learn how to use another template in the Winlink standard template list.  Please see the attachment below for further details.

You have until 11:59 p.m., Thursday, August 5, 2021 to submit you message.

Please send your message to ETO-HI and not to KH7HO.

These ETO weekly Winlink Thursday Exercises are put out by the EMCOMM Training Organization (ETO) formally called the ARC group, if you had participated in last year's drills.  The purpose is to encourage the use of Winlink in EMCOMM situations and to prepared for the twice a year nation wide drills.  Winlink is becoming the digital communication of choice for EMCOMM throughout the U.S.

If you are not yet using Winlink or want to learn more about Winlink, see the following for additional information and training:
https://hawaiiares.net - click on the Training tab at the top and scroll down to SDG ARES Winlink Express Video and also click on the Resources tab and click on the Winlink Workshops.

    - winlink.org - go to Select a page, go to Book of Knowledge, click on Watch the K4REF video tutorials.  You can also click on Download and install Winlink Express.  It is free but there will be a window that will pop up every so often to ask for your donation.  It is worth to donate the small amount that is ask.  Download the Winlink Express and learn to use the Telnet mode.  It is just using internet and not the VARA FM or VARA HF, packet, etc.  If you want to move up to VARA FM, you can.  It is free in the narrow but if you want to transmit your messages faster via RF mode, you will need to purchase the VARA license which is $35.00 (a discount from $70.00) and is a one time purchase for both VARA FM and VARA HF.  If interested, send an email to me.  VARA FM is very fast with the VARA license!  You can send attachments, pictures and the Winlink templates just like in email.

    - support@... - if you have any questions or problems using Winlink, VARA FM, etc. there is a team of four subject matter experts in Hawaii that can help you.

There is so much that can be done via Winlink.  Try it out and especially, have fun.

Please give this email maximum distribution.

Welcome to August where the weather is as unpredictable as ever.
This week we use a Winlink form to report our local weather as you see it.
There is no right versus wrong for this exercise, just an opportunity to use another form from the Winlink Express Standard Templates.
Of course, if you are actually having a weather event that requires emergency communications, don't use email (Winlink or any other).
    Have a clear day.

    Final newsletter Ham Radio Hawaii

    KH6OWL Darren Holbrook

This is the final newsletter. I’ve enjoyed this very much and am appreciative of the support and thanks that I did receive. I tried to fit this in while running a business and being with family.  I was never good at writing, and some of you made that painfully clear, but the intent was to always share what little I knew about upcoming events and to make it easier on those who felt like they were in the dark and to help spread the word about the hobby.

The Ham Radio Hawaii Facebook page, Facebook group, the Ham Radio Hawaii Buy, Sell  & Trade group have all been deleted.  We had 376 members when it was deleted with members from all over the world and lasted over 6 years.  A good run in my opinion! The two websites I have will run until they are due for renewal and at that time will go away as well.

There is a Hawaii Ham Radio Facebook group that can use the support so please think about joining that endeavor.

Please start treating each other better, we are no better than anyone else and you never know what that person is going through in their life.

Please, no responses and or calls or text and please remove me from your mailing list if you don't mind. To include the EARC list serve as I can't find the email that tells me how to do that anymore.

I hope you enjoy this one. I was almost finished so I decided to wrap it up early. 73

The problem is that it doesn't tell you you have to dial a number to opt in and out. This is just for the emergency test alerts. If you want all notifications you can turn those on in settings.

    Emergency Alerts on your phone

If you want to turn these alerts on or off, follow these steps:

    1. Go to Settings > Notifications.
    2. Scroll to the very bottom of the screen.
    3. Under Government Alerts, turn the type of alert on or off. *

For most Android devices, you can access your device's alerting settings through one of the following options:

    1. Tap Apps → Emergency Alerts → Menu (three dots in the upper right-hand corner of the screen) → Settings → Alert types.
    2. Tap Apps → Settings → Apps & Notifications → Advanced → Wireless Emergency Alerts.

For Opting in on IOS for Test Emergency alerts:

    Open the iPhone Phone App

    Tap keypad

    Dial *5005*25371#

Tap the call button and you’ll get an alert that says, “Test Alerts Enabled”

Tap the Word DISMISS when finished.

    Enabled.jpg

To turn off test emergency alerts on iPhone:

    Dial *5005*25370# and press call

You should see an alert saying “Test Alerts Disabled”.
