Re: May 19, 2021 Windward Oahu Winlink Net

Clem,

Thank you for being NCS. If need be, next time Michael steps out, I can help with the NCS.
Understood tonight's practice had some hiccups due to simplex reachability. Proved digipete works well with reply's via digipete not working out for tonight.

With that said, I have great interest in getting my ability to utilize HF Winlink up and running. My concerns, are, even though we can relay and go simplex, the entire internet for Hawaii may be down. I'm thinking the HF stations would be valuable in getting messages via simplex and digipete utilizing Winlink which is then passed on to the outside World.

Anyway, thank you for making this happen.
Big Aloha,
Mark (KH6LT)

APRS infrastructure additions and updates

KH6CP Craig Paul

Greetings all!

A few months ago Jeffrey Komori, KH6JUZ, added 5 watt forward error correction
enabled APRS stations (fx.25 protocol). You can see them as KH6JUZ-1x, where
x is 3, 4, and 5 on the website aprs.fi. Those are based in Mililani Mauka,
the Radford High area, and Kaimuki.

Sunday KH6JUZ-9 was established in Hawaii Kai. Rick Ching was "an early customer".
Sunday night marked the debut of an updated KH6MP-1, the historically rock-solid
Diamond Head APRS station.

These two Sunday additions also feature fx.25. The forward error correction
means that the data is recoverable from a much lower signal level. So once
those repeaters hear a "regular" APRS packet (which uses ax.25) the new digipeaters
encapsulate that "ordinary" APRS packet within error correction headers
and trailers and rebroadcast it.

Even though the KH6JUZ stations all broadcast at 5 watts I've already seen, in Kaneohe, direct error corrected transmissions from KH6JUZ-15 across the mountains.

Today KH6JUZ-8 was added in east Kapolei, likewise using fx.25.

This means there's an error corrected lower power "backbone" in south
and central O'ahu.

So, if you're in the Mililani and Wahiawa, Hawaii Kai, and Kapolei areas
give them a try! All those stations are also internet gateways (iGates).

There're more additions in the coming weeks!

Craig/KH6CP

DEM Repeaters are linked

KH6WG Skawamae Kawamae

Thanks for your patience.  I've been advised the DEM repeaters are linked again.  I've tested 76, 86, 88 and 68.  I'm not sure about 98 though.  I'm not getting the courtesy tone from that repeater though it appears to be linked to the network.  As is standard practice, if you're going to key up a repeater, please use your callsign.  Kerchunking is a violation of FCC rules.  Thanks very much to the custodians of the repeaters.

Fw: [ARC-EmComm-Training] Excercise Scenario - May 8th, 2021 #spring-2021

KH7HO Clem

To all Hawaii ARES members,

Hawaii ARES has setup this HawaiiARES@groups.io as a media to get information to our Hawaii ARES members and for our members to use to better communication with each other.

I am therefore, forwarding the below email from the ARC EmComm Winlink group about this coming Saturday, May 8, 2021 Spring Drill.  Some of you may already received this information directly for the ARC EmComm Winlink group.  Also, some of you have participated in past ARC drills.  These drills are a good way for us to better prepared for disasters.

The drill will begin at 12 noon HST and end at 4 p.m. HST.  There are two Winlink messages/templates which will be used to send your messages to ARCHI in Winlink, the Hawaii ARC Divisional Clearinghouse (PLEASE DO NOT SEND THE MESSAGES TO MY FCC CALLSIGN).  Please follow the instructions for the drill below.

This Spring Drill is open to all licensed Hams to participate, whether you are ARES, RACES, SKYWARN, HealthComm or non affiliated.   Most important have fun participating in this drill.

Encourage widest distribution on this email.

Additional information on forthcoming statewide exercises for 2021 will be send out which you are encouraged to participate.

Take care and be safe,
Clem Jung (KH7HO)

Subject: [ARC-EmComm-Training] Excercise Scenario - May 8th, 2021 #Spring-2021

The spring Red Cross nationwide emergency communications drill will be held on Saturday, May 8th, with Red Cross, ARES and other operators asked to demonstrate the ability to deliver digital messages using Red Cross forms to specific addresses via Winlink. For this exercise, participants are tasked with sending two messages to the Red Cross Divisional Clearinghouse for their geographic area. The exercise scenario and guidelines attached to this message provide details and instructions for operators desiring to participate. This exercise draws on lessons learned in the previous Winlink Thursday sessions. For those who have been following along, this scenario gives you the opportunity to put into practice the skills you have been practicing since January.  You will need to send a Winlink Check-In Form to register your participation and a separate WInlink message with a template ARC Disaster Requisition Form 6409.  The hand-written sample provided in the exercise packet is similar to one that might be handed to a radio operator supporting a Red Cross relief operation. We urge everyone to take their time and be sure the information transcribed into the Winlink template form is an accurate copy of the information supplied on the form and that each message is properly addressed to the recipients specified in the directions.

A new addition to our playbook is the inclusion of a real-time map that displays the location of each station as their Winlink Check-In Form is received. You can follow along and watch as the exercise progresses on Saturday by clicking here to view the map. Please submit your messages on Saturday, May 8th between noon and 4 p.m. local time.

For those who can do so safely, we encourage you to once again pack your "go-kit" and get out in the field to submit your exercise traffic. This is good practice for any operator looking to become proficient in EmComm operations.

Last month, many of you submitted photos of your go-kit in the field as an attachment to your Winlink message.  For this iteration, in order not to tie up the Winlink gateways unnecessarily, we request that anyone looking to submit an image to share in our gallery do so by sending it via traditional email to photos@ARC-EmComm-Training@groups.io  Do not send images using Winlink in this exercise.

This year our spring exercise falls on World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day,
an annual celebration of the principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. World Red Cross Red Crescent Day is celebrated on May 8th each year. This date is the anniversary of the birth of Henry Dunant, who was born on 8 May 1828. He was the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize. We have set up a special clearinghouse for amateur radio operators from other national Red Cross or Red Crescent societies to check in for this event using the Winlink tactical address ARCDX.

If you would like to be included in our future training and exercise sessions, visit our website at ARC-EmComm-Training.org and subscribe to our mailing list. You can also find additional information on suggested proficiency goals and training materials to help you broaden your skills as an amateur radio operator.

To all,

Join us Wednesday, MAY 5, at 9 PM CINCO DE MAYO

for a Windward Oahu Winlink Net

Please plan on sending  Winlink message check-in located in:

Templates>Standard>General forms> Winlink Check-in.

There are three ways you can get your check into net control.

  1. Address to KH6ML using Peer to Peer Message via VARA FM.  If you do not have this ability, please #2.
  2. Address to KH6ML using via Winlink Message VARA FM. If you do not have this ability, please #3
  3. Address to KH6ML using Winlink Message via Telnet.

To learn more, you may watch and listen to the net on ZOOM. Net control will not be responding to anything on ZOOM. Join our Cloud HD Video Meeting

In the comments, please let me know your class of license, your radios, and modes you can transmit on. Let us know what type of emergency power you have available.

Voice check-ins then move to digital mode :

No repeaters will be used. Listen on 145.070 and be ready to voice relay for other stations.

145.070 Gateway Feq with VARA FM P2P (NET CONTROL MAIN)

----------------Below may be used as needed ----------------

145.050 VARA FM P2P & Voice secondary

146.505 Voice and VARA FM P2P

ALL amateur operators are invited even if you do not have your radio equipment set up yet. You can still practice and send via Telnet. This is the first step to getting started. Here are some video to get you started: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-7mirT-kjfs84FQzLr-qv066Kl94rtYM

In advance, we will ask each operator to prepare at least 3 P2P messages to operators that might be on the net. Feel free to prep more.

WWN MSG1: List the Address of the closest fire station and EMS station to your home.

Re: City network issues - all repeaters are stand alone

WH6DWF Todd

Aloha fellow member and net controllers,

Now its the 21st century and the highest level of emergency communications needed in this day and age, it would be extremely helpful, especially during our yearly hurricane seasons, we need to have more transparency of when our linked repeater system here on Oahu is all connected, stand alone or simply down for repairs.
We should be notified by text and/or email of when our repeater system is disconnected, stand alone and/or down for repairs.
During the last couple of weeks, we have had check ins from other neighboring islands ever since (we), meaning, EARC Amateur Radio Club, DEM, State, and/or HI-EMA, worked together to replace and repair the Diamond Head Repeater 146.880 mhz.
I am personally grateful that the Diamond Head repeater now has the best and cleanest audio our Amateur radio community has ever had the pleasure of using.
We all are grateful of those individuals and entities that makes the use of these linked repeaters possible. They are the unsung hero’s of Hawaii’s important communication system workable and dependable for everyone to use, especially during all important events, large or small and at times, lifesaving for our neighbors and the communities on Oahu and beyond.
This brand new Diamond Head repeater now accepts even the weakest signals from handheld radios and distant stations. The old machine was experiencing a lot of packet loss and the placement of the antenna wasn’t the greatest.
Even if the linked repeater system is stand alone and/or disconnected for any reason, the Amateur radio community would be fully informed and can strive together to help keep those repeaters connected.
We now live in an age where transparency is extremely possible and quickly becoming the norm. No finger pointing needed, just informed and everyone can be aware of the current state of the linked repeater system.
This is extremely important during all disaster events, whether it’s a Pacific-wide tsunami event or a major hurricane, everyone will be informed and can manage the linked repeater system’s use on an individual basis or the Amateur radio community as a whole.
I believe we all can work together to make this transparency possible and can discuss ideas on how this can become a true reality for all of us.
We love this hobby or as Ron KH6D drilled into the mindset of many of us over the years, one of America’s best past-time.
Let’s make this important linked repeater system status notification available for everyone.
