2021 Renewal Season has begun!
WH7GG Keith Higa
CQ EARC! I can't believe another year is almost over. I hope everyone is doing well in these unprecedented times. Although we aren't able to get together as a club for now, I know that we have definitely been staying in touch in other ways, including our Zoom general meetings and our nightly nets on the linked repeaters. With our radios, we ham radio operators have a way to keep in touch across miles. Of course, keeping repeaters on the air takes time and money, and this is where your membership and support of EARC comes in, now more than ever. Among other things, we use your membership dues to maintain and repair the repeater system so we can stay in touch even when physically separated. With the arrival of 4th quarter comes the beginning of renewal season, so I ask you to reaffirm your commitment to the EARC with your membership renewal. Annual dues are still $20.00 for calendar year 2021 (January 1 to December 31). You might not be able to pay me directly for your dues as you've done in the past, but we still have options for you: 1. You can mail your payment to PO Box 30315, Honolulu, HI 96820. We have been checking club email at least once a week during the pandemic and we'll continue to do so. 2. You can send your payment via PayPal by going to http://www.earchi.org/member_pay.html and following the directions. You don't need to have a PayPal account to pay. If you know any members who are not on the club reflector, please pass this on to them. Since our club meetings are now on Zoom and we announce the meetings via the reflector (we don't place the link on our website for security reasons), it's critical that all our members be getting the club emails.
I'll be sending reminders throughout renewal season. Let's see if we can reach 100 renewed members by December 31, and reach or exceed our current membership of 115 by March. If you have any questions on your membership, please let me know. Hoping to hear from you, and hope to see a lot of you at the meeting tonight! Thanks and 73, Keith Higa, WH7GG Treasurer/Membership Chair, EARC

EARC Board of Directors Nomination Form
KH6WG Skawamae Kawamae
To: EARC All As we have not received any nominations thus far, the thought is that sending you this form will make it easier. Any and all positions are open. You may nominate yourself or others. If you nominate others, it would be wise to validate if that person is willing to accept the position. General Board member Garret Larson (WH6GL) has moved to Texas and has resigned his position. We would like to fill that position at minimum. The Board is there for its members. Please provide feedback to make this a better organization and promote the different facets of amateur radio. Thanks in advance. de KH6WG

Someone might have just turned them on. The site is 100% solar/battery. I think we might have a bad panel pulling the charge voltage down. Discussion is underway to upgrade the system. de kH6WG

Military adopts APRS like functions
KH6CP Craig Paul
In SET 2019 some Windward Hams demonstrated networking functions of APRS and geographical situational awareness, not of an enemy's location, but of road obstructions. Some in EARC built an inexpensive cable to utilize APRS between an HT and their Android phones for APRS. Looks like the military is finding this same capability useful. Craig/KH6CP

COVID 19 Project Help
KH6OWL Darren Holbrook
Please see below. I had a phone conversation with this gentleman and wanted to see if someone knows or can help his COVID project. He has been on the island for about 2 years. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks for the nice talk. First here’s the link to the project Im working on with UH We have submitted a proposal to DOH for funding. I
did most of the software on the original project that was performing
explosive detection, except the core signal processing detection
algorithms done by Dr. John Apostolos. Although
I originally have a hardware background. it has been so long I can only
build something if it has tubes with filament voltages hahaha. The
first problem I'm trying to solve is to establish a small R&D lab
here, where I can work on developing hardware to detect small signals
reacting from elements in the body. If you look at the web
page above, the theory is that our different body chemistry elements
will react to low power radio signals by emitting their own unique
signal when stimulated near its natural resonant frequency. We have done
this in practice by detecting explosives containing nitrogen. The
scientific nomenclature is termed NQR (nuclear quadrupole resonance) I
need to find a local contact hardware guy who knows about precision A/D
and D/A conversion, low noise rf amps, and can build low frequency
antennas for test. (200KHz-3MHz range). From my experience
with contracting with the Navy and NSA, those guys have the knowledge of
what the latest commercial technology has available. I don’t want to
build a special board with A/D D/A conversion if there is something
already available. Since this is for prototyping, I don’t need anything fancy, but just to test with and prove the theory. Right now there is no funding, but we are waiting to hear from the DOH for approval. So that’s it on the project side. So thanks again DJ WK1K (originally W8PID) 603.759.3975 --

Re: Mauna Kapu
WH6DWF Todd
Steve,
If I remember correctly, you guys just replaced those batteries with 6 volt golf cart batteries last year. I recommend that you intergrade that battery bank with a combination of 6 volt and 8 volt golf cart batteries in series and parallel circuits so that you have a total of 14+ volts and this should prevent this from happening again. The other added benefit is that you will no longer require a charge controller because a 14 volt system is so close to the charging rate of 12 volt panels that charge between 18-22 volts at full sunlight conditions. The repeaters themselves are usually rated at 13.8 volts +\- 15% so under 16 volts at full charge shouldn’t be an issue. If you want these batteries to last for decades instead of years, you can add a $9 Pulse/Desulf circuit board, which you wire into place by connecting the negative to one end of the battery bank and the positive on the opposite end of the battery bank. These Pulse/Desulf boards are sold on eBay for around $9 each. For larger battery banks, you can use two of these independently. There is another alternative, you can add a Pulse/Desulf solar panel but is more expensive to go this route, plus the panels are usually in the 20-50 watt range. If you need help in future, I’m willing to help out whenever needed. Todd WH6DWF SEMPER FI
