Additional Information about Novel Coronavirus 2019

WH6ERV lynn b

Thank you to KH6WG for forwarding our HDOH advisory about Novel Coronavirus 2019 to the EARC group account.  Here is some additional information:

I have been getting texts and emails from people asking whether they should wear N95 masks, N100 masks, and goggles.  This is not recommended by the CDC or HDOH.  Caregivers who are in frequent contact with sick people are advised to wear surgical masks.  Our toxicologist has told me that the N95 masks are no more protective than surgical masks when preventing the spread of a virus.   Additionally, we are still learning how this virus is transmitted.

It is important to get information from authorized sources. Our state's Public Health Preparedness Branch advises people with questions about the Novel Coronavirus to  visit our HDOH website, https://health.hawaii.gov/docd/advisories/novel-coronavirus-2019/  and the CDC website,  https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html for the latest and most accurate information.

If anyone has additional questions about Coronavirus, feel free to email me at lynn.bailey@... or sk1tter@....  I will follow up with the experts and try to find the information you need.

Regards,
Lynn Bailey

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hawai‘i Department of Health provides guidance

to healthcare providers

for 2019 Novel Coronavirus outbreak in China

Everyone is advised to get a flu vaccination

HONOLULU – The Hawai‘i Department of Health (DOH) is advising physicians statewide to be alert for patients who have travelled from Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China. The department sent out a detailed medical advisory to healthcare providers today on reporting, testing, specimen collection, and interim healthcare infection control recommendations for the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV). Providers are advised to notify the DOH Disease Outbreak Control Division immediately if a patient meets the case criteria.

The DOH is also advising everyone (six months of age or older) and especially those who travel to receive a flu vaccination. Dr. Sarah Park, state epidemiologist, said, “With the current flu activity, there will likely be crossover in clinical presentation so the more people vaccinated against flu, the more helpful that will be.”

The DOH is closely monitoring the outbreak of 2019-nCoV occurring in China and regularly coordinating with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In addition to issuing a Medical Advisory today to ensure all clinical providers are informed, the DOH is coordinating with Emergency Medical Service personnel/first responders, the Department of Transportation, and infection control partners in medical facilities throughout the state. DOH is also monitoring its well-established respiratory surveillance network which reviews flu activity in the state. Online resources for the 2019-nCoV are posted at https://health.hawaii.gov/prepare/cdc-issues-warning-about-pneumonia-cases-in-wuhan-china-caused-by-novel-coronavirus/.

An outbreak of a 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China has been developing since December 2019. This outbreak now includes more than 300 confirmed infections and several deaths in China with confirmed cases also in Thailand, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and the United States (one case in Washington State). While human-to-human transmission appears limited, the situation continues to evolve. Nearly all travelers from China enter the state from other U.S. or international ports of entry that are being monitored.

If you have traveled to Wuhan and feel sick, you should do the following:

  1. Seek medical care right away. Before you go to a doctor’s office or emergency room, call ahead and tell them about your recent travel and your symptoms.
  2. Stay home. Except for seeking medical care, avoid contact with others.
  3. Not travel while sick.
  4. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
  5. Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.

GROL examiners here

KH6WM Warren Munro

All:

Studying for and taking the GROL (General Commercial Radio Operator) test to acquire the commercial GROL license is a worthy effort for any amateur interested in increasing their radio/electronics knowledge. The GROL replaced a series of commercial radio operator licenses and is a lifetime (no renewal) license.

One current tester (as of a year or so ago) was the Pacific Maritime Academy whose main business is Coast Guard license training and testing.  Another source is via Elkins (check the Web) license prep who said they had someone here but had not utilized lately.

When I passed the GROL years ago, testing was being done by much-lamented Richard LaChance of StarComm Radio. Later, Lee Wical (may he not rest in peace) was a commercial examiner for W5YI.

The W5YI GROL book is excellent, has been revised fairly recently.  W5YI had another person here, but moved to mainland. May have another one by now.

Is there any place on Oahu that administers the FCC GROL exam? I looked on the fcc site but didn’t see anything then came across this site.

Thank you for your help,

Petition to FCC regarding 40M and 80M

KH6WG Skawamae Kawamae

To EARC members all,
The Amateur Radio community wishes to submit the attached petition to the FCC for changes in the 40M and 80M bands.  It is of high importance for those who do EMCOMM functions on these bands.  I'd like to get a feeling for the stance of the EARC.  Please email me directly.  Thanks in advance.

Hello, my name is Drake Melton. My Father is huge into HAM Radios. I got my hands onto a military tanker helmet. Which includes a headset. I was wondering if you knew someone who could help me fix it up? I’m trying to see if it works or can find someone to help make it work. So I could give it to my father.

If you’d like to contact me my phone number is +18129724928. Thank you for your time! Have a good day!

Renewal emails and payment link

WH7GG Keith Higa

Good morning EARC members,

We’ve gotten several reports of the member application form on the site not giving the response email that normally is given. We’re looking into the issue.

In the meantime, if you have applied for renewal using the renewal form and have not received the email, below is the link for PayPal payment.

(Please do not share this link outside the club as it is not publicly accessible.)

If your information has changed recently (callsign, address, phone), go ahead and shoot me an email at keith.higa@... so I can update our membership records.

Apologies for the inconvenience. If you have any questions please let me know.

Thanks,
Keith WH7GG
