Hi Hawaii Hams,

I am looking for people interested in finding out more about Amateur Radio High Frequency Contesting. I help maintain and manage one of the preeminent HF stations in Hawaii, KH6YY, which is the personal station of Alex, KH6YY. A group of us regularly participate in several radio contests each year in different categories, mostly Multiple Transmitter - Multiple Operator (aka mulit-multi) and Mult-Two, and lastly Multi-Single. Single Operator- Single Band efforts are sometimes done with individuals doing their own band at the same time from the station under their own call signs.

Next weekend a major worldwide contest known as CQ WPX CW is being held. I am open to host people interested in finding out more about worldwide HF radio contesting next Saturday, May 25. Likely mid-morning to lunch time or thereafter.

If you want to know more about this aspect of the hobby that can help you to learn technical skills and become a better operator, please let me know and join me and Doug, KH6U,  for a demonstration.

It is an International Morse Code contest but the principles are the same with a few differences. We shall make some contacts to show how it is done. If you know Morse Code it is a plus but not necessary for this demonstration.

Contact me by email ASAP. Space may be limited. The details will be forwarded later. Alex's home and station is on the North Shore above Waimea Bay, aka Pupukea. Even if you aren't sure but have questions please contact me anyway. Younger people are also welcome (preferably in middle school or older so they might understand things better).

73, Kimo Chun  KH7U

GO Kit Challenge

KH6OWL Darren Holbrook

Aloha, Please share with as many people as possible.

To recap for the Go Kit challenge on Saturday.

Bring what you need; table, chair, water, food, etc. You are practicing deploying with your kit. I won't be setting up tents, tables, chairs, you should plan on being self-sufficient.

The address with get you to the large park. The skate park is located on the side of the park. You will see a large red and white arrow showing the way to the archery range.

Take H1 West Bound.

Exit off at Kapolei Makakilo Exit, At the top of the ramp, turn left at the light.

Screen Shot 2019-05-02 at 8.55.27 PM.png

Stay in the center lane.

Go through the next stop light, Chil's on the Right, Walmart on the left) A big large open field will be  on the left past the light.

Screen Shot 2019-05-02 at 8.57.49 PM.png

Take the first right (You will see a big red/white arrow sign for the Archery Range

Screen Shot 2019-05-02 at 8.53.49 PM.png

Go to the back of the parking lot.

Screen Shot 2019-05-02 at 8.58.58 PM.png

Hope to see you at the event. Come learn, share knowledge, get to know each other.

What is a go Kit? Well it is what ever you use to get on the air in the event of an emergency, but most people say it is portable. So that can be a hand held with extra batteries or a way to charge the batteries. A better antenna than a rubber duck is preferred but on an Island may not be necessary. It does not have to be HF capable but that would be good.

Your go kit can be in your vehicle or a portable set up.

Come out to check out what others have done for Go Kits, get ideas, talk about what worked and what didn't, where they got the parts to build it or where did they buy it from. Ask for help or just get ideas.

Show off your vehicle installation and antennas!

Should be a fun and educational event.

Prizes maybe included for best kits.

This Saturday, 4 May 2019, 0900 (0830 set up) to 12 at the Kapolei Skate Park.

Kapolei Skate Park, 1077 Manawai St. Kapolei, HI 96707

General Class Upgrade Internet Class

AH0A Joe S.

With a lot of “strong encouragement” from Joe (KH6FGI), we decided to try a rushed Internet course for General upgrade.  (if there is interest).

For those that would like to upgrade to General class before the question pool changes on July 1st  2019, EARC will hold an Internet class based on the ZOOM conference software.

The course will be based on the Hamedication.org instruction material, based on the current ARRL General Class License manual used with EARC classes taught on Oahu.

                http://www.arrl.org/shop/ARRL-General-Class-License-Manual-Spiral-Bound/

Because only two months remain before the question pool changes, the schedule for the five 2-hour sessions is compressed:

Date and time

ARRL Manual Chapters

Questions

5/8 (Wed) - 7 to 9 pm

Chapters 2 and 3

99

Procedures and Practices; Rules and Regulations

5/11 (Sat) - 7 to 9 pm

Chapter 4

117

Components and Circuits

5/13 (Mon) - 7 to 9 pm

Chapter 5

78

Radio Signals and Equipment

5/15 (Wed) - 7 to 9 pm

Chapters 6 and 9

62

Communication Modes and; RF Safety

5/18 (Sat) - 7 to 9 pm

Chapters 7 and 8

106

Antennas and Propagation;

462

EARC instructors Steve (KH6WG), Joe (KH6FHI) and Joe (AH0A) will be participating in this experiment using Internet to teach classes.

We will accept five students who have time to participate. Students should have a PC with a large screen to view course material displayed.  PC audio (microphone and speaker) is preferred, although phone audio is available. Contact me or Joe (KH6FHI) if you would like to test your computer and Internet connection with the ZOOM software,

To register send an email to ah0a@...

Registered students will be sent logon information by email.

The exam will be held at the next EARC meeting at the Aiea Public Library, 5/21 at 6:30 pm.

Aloha es 73 de Joe/AH0A

Ham Radio Go Kit Challenge

KH6OWL Darren Holbrook

What: Go-kit Challenge

When: Date / Time: May 4th, 2019; 0900 to 11:30 (Set up 08: 30)

Where: 1077 Manawai St, Kapolei, HI 96707 (Kapolei Skate Park)

Why: First and foremost, this event is intended to be fun and educational. The competition is just for fun and the real prize is the bragging rights. There will be some small awards, but don’t get too excited. Judging will take place between 10 AM and 11 AM.  Your go kit must be able to power on in order to be chosen as a finalist. You can still bring it and show it off but cannot be chosen as a finalist.  Battery, Sun, Wind, you name it, as long as it can power on, you will be in the mix. You can also show off your car-mounted radios, which will be a different category.

Participants are required to provide their own power, snacks, and entertainment.

Remember when you must deploy with your go-kit you may be expected to provide for your own needs and sustenance for up to 72-hours.

You don’t need to bring a 72-hour kit, but bring enough to survive until the event is over.

Your kit could be judged on the following:

Go Kit: (Non Vehicle Mounted)

Capability: UHF/VHF, Digital, Winlink, HF, the more the better.

Frequency usage: How bands can you go on?

Power Type: Solar, Wind, Battery, Generator, Electrical Hook up.

Weight: The lighter the better, you have to tell us the weight.

How is it all put together? What container holds the set up.

Bonus points for out of the box thinking.

Vehicle Mounted:

Quality of mounting

Cables and wires hidden

Unique ways to mount

Capability: UHF/VHF, Digital, Winlink, HF, the more the better.

Antenna Mounting

Frequency usage: How bands can you go on?

Bonus points for out of the box thinking.

Share with others what you built or what you purchased and how you set it up. What worked and what didn't so others can build or purchase. This will make us better at what we do, please share as widely as possible.
